What is Durable Medical Equipment?

Durable medical equipment, often referred to as DME, includes medical devices used in the home or during recovery to support mobility, stabilization, protection and daily function.

In spine care, examples may include cervical collars, lumbar or thoracic braces, mobility devices and bone growth stimulators. Certain devices may also be covered under insurance benefits depending on medical necessity and the patient's plan.

Why It May Be Recommended

Reasons your doctor may recommend DME

Different devices support different recovery needs. Your provider can determine whether a brace, stimulator or other device may be appropriate for your condition.

01
Stabilization

Neck / Back Brace

  • Help reduce pain by limiting movement in the affected region
  • Provide support after selected surgical procedures
  • Protect the treatment area during recovery
  • Provide mechanical support in selected spinal conditions
  • Help support recovery after compression fracture
  • Offer a non-invasive treatment option
02
Recovery Support

Bone Growth Stimulator

  • Help support bone growth after spinal fusion
  • Assist selected patients with difficult or delayed healing
  • Provide a non-invasive adjunct to recovery
  • Be designed for convenient at-home use
  • Complement physician-directed post-operative treatment
